Why Strategies fail?

Why Strategies are like fairy tales? Because…

1. Shareholders and Executive Management do not believe it. They think a strategy is like a painting hang on the walls of the board room or inserted in the brochure of the Company to impress the clients , associates and readers rather than themselves and their people . Moreover , is written in corporate language which does not provoke or emotionalize people. It is not heart felt but rather pure logic. It is left brain ( logic and arithmetic) oriented rather than right brain ( emotions and creativity ).

2. People do not understand it because it has never been interpreted in the words of people nor has it included the answer to the question. What is it for me?

3. Daily operational systems and structures do not support it. Often they work against it. This is because of the 2 above plus the fact that strategies are not aligned and therefore objectives, organizational structures and processes are not aligned with strategies. Often enough they work against the strategies and of course this is quite notable to everyone including customers.

Here are some examples regarding point 3 right from the field.

One Company had a problem in Sales. Their mid results were far from the budgeted figure. When I ask what is their sales strategy they said to achieve the sales target. This is not a Sales strategy. Furthermore, their organizational structure had no position indicating Sales or Commercial responsibility.

Another Company had a teamwork as a Value, however, their performance appraisal system and the incentives system was based totally on individual performance.
