Does IT people come up with the best IT solutions?

Had a talk recently with a valued connection who claimed the best IT innovations are made by IT people. Is this really the full picture?

The innovators behind IT success stories might be considered IT people as they should understand the technology behind the solutions, and possibly also build such solutions?

It takes more than technology though to come up with a useful IT solution attractive to the masses, such as Skype, iPhone and Facebook. I would say at least usability engineering, entrepreneurship, marketing and sales are the skills required. Skills that can also be possessed by IT people.

Referring to IT innovators simply as IT people would be diminishing their grandness and true skills, in my humble opinion. What is your opinion?
